VICTORIA – The government will not implement user fees on inland ferry routes until a provincial transportation strategy is completed in the new year, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.
The announcement was made at the annual general meeting of the B.C. Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association in Victoria.
“We want to ensure that any decisions on fees support our provincewide transportation goals and priorities,” Campbell said. “Since the fees were announced, I have directed our Transportation Minister to begin work on a comprehensive provincial transportation strategy that will include inland ferries.
“New transportation infrastructure is critical for creating jobs and revitalizing economic opportunities, and that’s what the provincial strategy is designed to achieve. It’s important that any decisions are made in the context of that strategy.”
User fees were to be implemented on 11 inland ferry routes in January. Campbell said no fees will be implemented while work on the province’s transportation strategy is still underway.
